“Window of opportunity” for climate change adaptation

Good news, finally. And I don’t mean for dentists.

A new compendium of research released today outlines the best options for “climate-proofing” some of the world’s most important food crops.

It features significant contributions from scientists at CIAT, and the CGIAR-wide program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS).

While climate change means farmers will need to deal with hotter, dryer, and in some cases, wetter conditions, the researchers – writing in a new book, Crop Adaptation to Climate Change – argue that many of these traits can be found in plant samples already held in international gene banks.

Tapping this potential will be crucial to producing more resilient crops, and should be a priority for plant breeders, they argue.
