Climate change: Asia-Pacific faces a “humanitarian crisis”

The Asia-Pacific region will face a “humanitarian crisis” as climate change displaces millions of people in the next few decades, according to a new report from the Asian Development Bank.

The Climate Change and Migration in Asia and the Pacific report says the region will be one of the most affected by climate change in the world, triggering an exodus of millions of refugees from densely populated low-lying coastal areas to the region’s “mega cities”, which will struggle to cope with the influx.

The report calls for international mechanisms and national assistance schemes to be put in place to manage the potential mass displacement.
