We thought we’d share this picture we just received of Hillary Clinton taking a look at drought-resistant bean varieties developed by the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI). CIAT is helping get these beans to the farmers who need them.

The US Secretary of State visited the KARI headquarters in Nairobi last month while in Kenya for the eighth African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) forum. During her tour of the institute she was shown these and other KARI bean samples that had survived bacterial blight disease and the harsh drought in Western Kenya.

In a speech to the institute, she reiterated the recent call of US President Barack Obama, to help Africa develop long term solutions to hunger. “We need a comprehensive approach focused on sustainability,” she said. “We must address not only increasing availability of food by helping people in countries produce it, but we must make food accessible to those who need it and teach people to utilize it properly.”

Many thanks to David Karanja of KARI for sharing the photo.
