CIAT won two of three awards for ‘outstanding outcome story’ held by the Water, Land and Ecosystem Program (WLE) of the CGIAR. Fred Kizito’s work, quantifying ecosystem services as the basis for Payment for Ecosystem Services in the Upper Tana Basin of Kenya and Marcela Quintero’s work on Rewards for Ecosystem Services in watersheds in Peru both received $25,000 in prize money.

Their projects demonstrated strong science that exemplifies the ecosystem focus of WLE. In addition, Evan Girvetz, Marcela Quintero and Fred Kizito’s innovation fund project that will integrate agricultural livelihood concerns into ecosystem services mapping, modeling and trade-off analysis, was one of only three proposals to be accepted in the recent ‘Innovation Fund’ competitive call from WLE. Together these achievements are a strong showing for CIAT in the arena of Ecosystem Services.
