A third of food produced goes in the bin each year

Globally we waste or lose approximately 1.3 billion tons of food each year – more than HALF of the world’s annual cereals crop – according to a new FAO-commissioned report.

While in the developed world most of the food lost is through “wastage” – that is, good food is thrown away – in the developing world, food losses occur predominantly at the production, harvest and processing phases, the report continues. More investment in production and transport systems and improved methods of linking farmers directly to buyers could reduce this loss significantly.

The report argues that it is much more effective to reduce food losses than increase production in order to feed the world’s growing population. It calls on governments and schools to help change consumer attitudes about food and waste, like the UK government is doing with their Love Food Hate Waste campaign.

The report will be launched this week at the international congress Save Food! in Germany.
