China bolsters greening strategy with new targets

China has increased targets for industry to reduce carbon emissions and save water, as it works towards sustaining its economic growth at a lower environmental cost.

The five-year plan is to cut carbon emissions and energy intensity by 18 per cent, and water use by 30 per cent. These goals form part of the country’s international pledge to reduce energy intensity by up to 45 per cent per unit of GDP by 2020, and are higher than those initially set last year.

The onus to achieve these reductions is on the industrial sector, namely power plants, steel mills, aluminum smelters, and cement factories.
