The FAO has marked world water day by calling for greater investment in water management innovations, including improved agricultural and forestry practices to help with effective watershed management.

Through the CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food, CIAT is working with watershed communities in the Andes to find solutions that improve the livelihoods of upstream farmers while enhancing the quality and availability of water for downstream users, including urban communities.

Seventy per cent of the global population will live in urban areas by 2050, and over half of us now live in cities. According to the FAO, this provides opportunities for rainwater harvesting for urban agriculture which can contribute to sustainable food production and help meet the needs of a growing and urbanizing world population.
