An Ecuadorian court has found Chevron guilty of massive contamination in the Amazon, fining them US$8.6 billion for damages to agriculture and human health, the BBC reports today.

Thirty thousand Ecuadorians filed the lawsuit against the oil giant, claiming that the dumping of billions of gallons of toxic waste into unlined pits and rivers between 1972 and 1992 damaged rainforest and crops, killed farm animals, and increased the incidence of cancer in the region.

The judgement comes at the end of an almost 20-year-long lawsuit. Chevron said they will appeal the decision.
