World population will reach 7 billion in 2011

On or around the 31st October 2011, the world’s 7 billionth person will be born, according to this recent article in The Guardian.

For those fearing a Malthusian apocalypse, this a worrying milestone on the way to the world population peaking at 9 billion by 2050, after which the United Nations expects numbers to start declining.

“Stood shoulder to shoulder, the entire human population could fit within the city limits of Los Angeles,” writes Leo Hickman. “We’ve got more than enough land upon which to collectively sustain ourselves, we just need to use it more wisely and fairly. But, given the stubborn realities of global inequalities, the question remains: are there too many of us to achieve a sustainable future?”
